Heathrow Airport is making a major change to security measures when holidays restart
With post-lockdown holidays abroad on a lot of people’s minds, passengers in London’s Heathrow Airport will soon have a smoother and more efficient security screening service, so you can get to your pre-flight pint quickly and avoid the faff of having to take things out of your suitcase at the security gate! Heathrow Airport is introducing its next generation cabin baggage and security screening equipment later this year, which will allow passengers to leave liquids and electronic devices in their bags at security gates. The enhanced technology aims to significantly reduce the amount of plastic used at Heathrow, with passengers no longer required to put liquids in plastic bags before going through security.

The major GBP50 million investment was made back in 2019 but timelines have been delayed due to Covid travel restrictions, Heathrow said.
The aim is that these new lanes will eventually be installed airport-wide, with the first lanes being installed later this year in an anticipation of increased passenger numbers. Speaking about the new investment in 2019, Heathrow’s Chief Solutions Officer Chris Garton said: “Heathrow has a proud history of investing in making every journey better and that’s why we’re delighted to be rolling out our new CT equipment. “This cutting-edge kit will not only keep the airport safe with the latest technology, but will mean that our future passengers can keep their focus on getting on with their journeys and less time preparing for security screening.”
The move is a collaboration with Smith’s Detection, a leading security screening technologies company.
Smiths Detection President, Roland Carter said: “We are delighted to once again be given the opportunity to work closely with Heathrow Airport to provide leading-edge technologies that bring the best security outcomes and passenger experience. “Both Smiths Detection and Heathrow are focused on intelligent solutions that deliver efficiency, security and resilience; and these new lanes will allow for improvements to be easily integrated as technology develops.” The technology company also reassured flyers that the new technology meets the highest safety and regulatory requirements, while also improving the efficiency of Heathrow’s security.
